About
The invention of the French 75 is often attributed to Harry MacElhone, a famous Scottish bartender who worked at the New York Bar in Paris (later renamed Harry’s New York Bar). The first written mention of the cocktail appears in the 1927 book Here’s How and its definitive version was published in 1930 in Harry Craddock’s Savoy Cocktail Book.
The cocktail is said to have been inspired by an older drink, in which gin was mixed with lemon and sugar. The addition of champagne gave rise to a more sophisticated and festive version.
