The exact origins of Snakebite remain unclear, but it is generally accepted that it appeared in the United Kingdom in the 1980s. It was particularly popular in student pubs and alternative circles, especially among punks and rock music fans.
The name "Snakebite" is said to refer to the drink's quick onset: despite its sweet and fruity taste, the combination of beer and cider can lead to a quicker intoxication than with beer alone.
