About
Although the roots of amaretto can be traced back to Italy, the Amaretto Sour really came to be in the United States in the early 20th century. In the 1960s and 1970s, the trend for sour cocktails that combined spirits and fruits was gaining momentum. The classic bourbon sour (bourbon and lemon) inspired the creation of the Amaretto Sour, a sweet and fruity version that quickly gained popularity.
The first recipes for the Amaretto Sour appeared in American cocktail books in the 1960s. The cocktail first spread to bars in the United States before finding an international audience, largely due to its sweetness and easy drinking.
The Amaretto Sour quickly gained popularity for its balance of bitter amaretto and fresh lemon, often topped with an egg white for a velvety, frothy texture.
