Colorful, refreshing and reminiscent of sunny beaches, the Tequila Sunrise is an iconic cocktail made with tequila, orange juice and grenadine. Behind its spectacular sunrise-like appearance lies a fascinating story that spans several decades.
The origins of the first Tequila Sunrise date back to the 1930s in Tijuana, Mexico, where a mixture of tequila, crème de cassis, lime and soda water was served under this name. However, this original version remains little known today.
It was in the 1970s, at the Trident Bar in Sausalito, California, that the cocktail took on the form we know today. It was then revisited by bartenders Bobby Lozoff and Billy Rice, who replaced the initial ingredients with tequila, orange juice and grenadine. Its success was immediate, especially when it was discovered by Mick Jagger at a party organized for the launch of a Rolling Stones tour. The cocktail then became the group's flagship drink and gained popularity throughout the country.
The Tequila Sunrise became so iconic that it even inspired a song by the Eagles in 1973, as well as a film of the same name in 1988. Today, this cocktail is still a must-have in bars and on sunny holidays, appreciated for its sweet taste and its gradient presentation, worthy of a sunrise in a glass.
