It was in the Bohemian Club of San Francisco that Edward Townsend led that the Gibson was invented, by one of the members of the Club, giving its name at cocktails. The first book to publish the complete Gibson recipe was in 1908, in The World's Drinks and How to Mix Them by William Boothby.
