Recipe

For 1 person
3 cl gin
1.5 cl lemon juice
1.5 cl maraschino
1 cl crème de violette

How to make

👉 shaker / 🥃 coupe / 🍸 short drink (7cl) / ⏱️ 4 mn
  1. Shake the gin, lemon juice, maraschino and crème de violette with a few ice cubes.

  2. Strain into a coupe glass.

History

The Aviation cocktail has 2 recipes. The first was published in 1913 in Straub's Manual of Mixed Drinks by Jacques Straub, and the second completely different in 1916 in "Recipes for mixed drinks" by Hugo Ensslin, head bartender at the Wallick Hotel Times Square in New York.

It's the 1916 version that is remembered and has become a classic, the 1913 version that has completely fallen into oblivion was made with absinthe, applejack, lime juice and grenadine:
