Recipe

For 1 person
2.5 cl gin
2.5 cl Cognac
2 cl Lime Cordial
A few drops of Angostura bitters
8 cl Ginger Beer

How to make

Technique: shaker / Glass: old-fashioned / Type: long drink (15cl) / Time: 4 mn
  1. Shake the gin, brandy, lime juice cordial and Angostura bitters with a few ice cubes.

  2. Strain into an old-fashioned glass.

  3. Complete with ginger beer.

  4. Stir lightly with a mixing spoon.

  5. Insert a slice of orange and garnish with a sprig of mint.

History

The Suffering Bastard cocktail is said to have been created by Joe Scialom at the Shepherd's Hotel in Cairo, Egypt before 1950. The above recipe is the original as it is it was found in private papers of Joe Scialom.

The first written reference of this cocktail dates from May 1, 1950, it is the Time Magazine which indicated that the Suffering Bastard was the favorite drink of the Egyptians.

Why the recipe was named "Suffering Bastard" is a mystery though.

The Suffering Bastard has recently become one of the new classic IBA cocktails.
