New invention straight from North Korea, a liqueur promises you a hangover-free tomorrow! So, a small revolution in the world of alcohol or a simple utopia?
It is from the weeklies The Pyongyang Times and NK News that we learn that the North Korean regime claims to have invented a liquor that does not cause pain. head or other harm specific to a hangover.
The secret of this "Koryo" liqueur lies in the fact that it is made from Kaesong Koryo, a 6-year-old Korean ginseng which has medicinal properties, but also seems -it in replacing sugar with rice gluten.
Possible or not?
Let's not get too excited, North Korea already told us in 2015 that it had invented a medicine based on this same ginseng and which was supposed to cure the AIDS or Ebola virus...
In fact, what is disturbing in this story is that the hangover is due to dehydration caused by the antidiuretic hormone (ADH) contained in alcohol. Concretely, no matter the composition of an alcohol, as long as it is alcoholic, there will be this hormone which will cause dehydration and therefore a hangover.
In addition, replacing sugar is unlikely since it is the base of an alcohol, alcoholic fermentation is effectively defined by the transformation of sugars into alcohol (ethanol). So no sugar, no alcohol!
In short, there is room for doubt as to whether this is not just a publicity stunt.
