About
The Harvey Wallbanger’s history dates back to the mid-1950s, although it wasn’t until a decade later that it really gained popularity. The cocktail is the brainchild of an American bartender named Donato “Duke” Antone, who was working in Los Angeles, California. He is said to have created the original recipe for the cocktail using a combination of vodka, orange juice, and Galliano, an Italian liqueur made with herbs and spices.
However, it wasn’t until the early 1970s that the cocktail got its name. The origin of the name itself is a bit unclear, but the most common version is that a man named Harvey, a regular at Antone’s establishment, was particularly fond of the new drink. After consuming several of these cocktails, he found himself in a very peculiar state, leading to the creation of the memorable name: “Wallbanger”, in reference to his slightly “swaying” demeanor after several drinks. It is therefore a play on words that gives the cocktail its name, an allusion to both the character and the effect of the drink.
