About
The Gin Tonic has its roots in the British Empire, when soldiers and settlers stationed in India were looking for an effective way to combat malaria. At the time, quinine, extracted from the bark of the cinchona tree, was the main treatment for the disease. However, its taste was extremely bitter.
To alleviate this bitterness, the British began mixing quinine with sweetened carbonated water, creating the first version of tonic water. It was then that they came up with the idea of adding gin, an alcohol already popular in England, making the drink more enjoyable to drink. Thus was born the Gin and Tonic, a cocktail that is both refreshing and functional.
