About
Contrary to what its name suggests, the Moscow Mule has nothing Russian about it, except for the main ingredient: vodka. It was born in the 1940s in Los Angeles, in a bar called the Cock 'n Bull, located on Sunset Boulevard.
The story goes that three struggling entrepreneurs unwittingly gave birth to this legendary cocktail:
- John G. Martin, an American distributor who had bought the Smirnoff vodka brand at a time when vodka was still unknown in the United States. He was desperate for a way to popularize the spirit.
- Jack Morgan, owner of the Cock 'n Bull bar, who had a large supply of unsold ginger beer.
- Sophie Berezinski, a Russian immigrant who was trying to sell off a stock of copper mugs made in the family business.
According to legend, in 1941, the three men discussed their problems over drinks and decided to experiment. They mixed Smirnoff vodka with Morgan's homemade ginger beer, added a squeeze of lime, and served it in Berezinski's copper mugs. The Moscow Mule was born.
