History

The Dirty Martini cocktail is a variation of the famous Dry Martini which has become world famous because he was notably James Bond's favorite cocktail. The Dirty Martini recipe simply includes more olive juice (or olive brine or olive bitter), and it is also made under the same name when vodka replaces gin.

The Dirty Martini takes its name from the fact that the addition of olive brine or bitter gives the cocktail a slightly greenish and cloudy appearance.

The origin of this cocktail has never really been known, but various theories exist:

  • First theory: the cocktail would have been known as Martinez and tasted as early as the 1850s in San Francisco.
  • Second theory: the cocktail was created by a bartender in the town of Martinez.
  • Third theory: it was invented by a bartender at the Knickerbockers Hotel in New York shortly after 1910.

The Dirty Martinis have an origin that is impossible to identify and therefore have no original recipe or typical composition, which is why it is according to each person's taste that either vodka or gin will have to be used.
