About
Tommy’s Margarita is a modern take on the classic Margarita cocktail, and its history dates back to the 1990s in San Francisco, more precisely at Tommy’s Mexican Restaurant. This cocktail was invented by Julian Cox, a talented bartender who wanted to reinvent the Margarita by emphasizing the authentic flavors of tequila.
The inspiration behind Tommy’s Margarita came from the idea of simplifying the traditional Margarita recipe by removing the triple sec (or other orange liqueur) and replacing the sugar syrup with a high-quality agave nectar, a natural sweetener that is directly derived from the agave plant, which is used in the production of tequila itself.
The recipe therefore consists of three main ingredients: tequila (ideally a 100% agave tequila), agave nectar and fresh lime juice, all served over ice. The result is a purer Margarita, where the sweetness of the agave balances the acidity of the lime, while highlighting the flavors of the tequila.
The cocktail quickly gained popularity among tequila connoisseurs and cocktail lovers who were looking for a more natural and flavor-packed alternative to traditional Margaritas. Tommy’s approach also helped reintroduce the authenticity of tequila, while offering a more modern and less sweet take on this cocktail classic.
Today, Tommy’s Margarita is a staple on cocktail menus in bars around the world, with its simple yet bold recipe that puts the spotlight on the main ingredient: tequila. It represents a modern take on a classic, proving that sometimes, less is more.
